A fairly new entrant into the specialty coffee scene in Singapore, Nylon Coffee Roasters opened on 1 May 2012. Run by Dennis Tang and Jiamin, Nylon’s primary business is to roast and retail beans in addition to selling takeaway coffees thus, the shop space is small.
There are only 4 chairs in the reception area. However, regulars are happy to stand and mingle within the shop or sit at the wrought iron benches in the public relaxation area a short distance away from the cafe. As Jiamin and Dennis were previously from Papa Palheta and Loysel’s Toy, they have a loyal following among specialty coffee lovers in Singapore.
If you are looking for a cafe to linger at or for free WiFi to surf the web, this is not the place to do so however, you can be assured of a well-brewed cup of coffee whenever you visit. The menu is simple because Nylon adopts a consultative approach in taking your coffee order. They’ll make recommendations according to your taste and preference. The serving sizes for white coffee is a determinant of how much milk is added to your shot of coffee.Nylon’s Interpretation of a Cappuccino (5 oz) @ S$3.80
The Cappuccino here was brewed with Nylon’s seasonal espresso blend, El Primero, which is made up of 60% Brazilian and 40% Peruvian beans. Read the tasting notes here: Nylon’s El Primero Espresso blend. It was strong but smooth on the palate and didn’t require any sugar because the milk was frothed to it’s sweet spot.
Nylon doesn’t serve food however, during one of my recent visits, they played host to a pop-up bakery by the ladies from Sadie Rose. Sadie Rose is a regular vendor at the Farmers’ Market at Loewen Gardens so do stop by their stall for baked goodies.
By the time I got to Nylon, most of the cakes and breads had been sold. I had the Lemon Tart and Brownie with Salted Caramel Icing. I don’t recall how much the cakes and breads cost though. The lemon curd was tangy but a little too grainy for my liking. Perhaps this particular batch of lemon curd was a little overcooked because the lemon tart that I ate from Sadie Rose the prior week had a smooth lemon curd filling within a crumbly and buttery base. The brownie was rich in chocolate however, the salted caramel icing was just a little too sweet for my liking. I guess I would have preferred it if regular salted caramel was used instead of being sweetened and given a little more texture with icing sugar.

After all that sweet stuff, I needed more coffee to stay awake and so I ordered an Iced White, which is essentially a long black over ice with milk. It was very smooth on the palate and refreshing. The coffees at Nylon are a Must-Try!
The adults are not the only fans of good coffee at Nylon Coffee Roasters. There is a growing fan base amongst the kids in the neighbourhood too. Initially drawn by the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, this young boy has been popping by on a daily basis for a Babyccino.
